Indonesia 19: Traditional Dances of Sumatera and Kalimantan

Traditional dances in Indonesia reflect the rich diversity of ethnics as well as influences of many foreign cultures. Certain traditional dances might be centuries old, while some others might be created or recreated less than a decade ago. There are some newly created dances as an effort to revive the old traditions or as a new interpretation of the old traditional dances.

Festival of traditional dances is organized during Annual Cultural and Tourism Promotion Week (Gebyar Wisata dan Budaya Nusantara, GWBN). These photos were captured during the 10th GWBN in Jakarta. Subjects of these photos were dances from Kerinci, Pekanbaru, Tanah Laut, Nunukan, and Berau.
