There are many historical buildings around Asia Afrika Street in Bandung. Two well known historical buildings in this area are the Gedung Merdeka (may freely translated to the Independent Building) and the Savoy Homann Hotel. The First Asia-Africa Conference in 1955 was held in the Gedung Merdeka.
The Savoy Homann Hotel is believed as the first hotel in Bandung, constructed before 1908 and originally managed by Homann’s family of Germany. The original name was Grand Hotel Homann. In 1937-1939, this hotel was rebuilt by Albert Frederick Aalbers and since then physical structure and architecture of the hotel was maintained and relatively unchanged. Many international figures had stayed in this hotel, including head of Asian and African nations during the First Asia-Africa Conference in 1955.
