Indonesia is mostly known as an Archipelagic country or a maritime continent with tropical humid climate. However, there is part of Indonesia, i.e. East Nusa Tenggara islands, can be classified as an arid ecosystem. Annual rainfall in this area is very low with very long dry period. Natural vegetation is limited and biodiversity is much less than typical tropical humid ecosystem. This course covers definition and description of arid landscape, aridity index and its use for classification of the arid zones, types of natural vegetation commonly observed in the arid climate, agricultural activities and animal husbandry, survival mechanisms of xerophytic plants, and classification of arid landscaped based on natural vegetation.
